SIMON Paging Services for Users

[Nov 23, 2009 14:09] Web access to Microsoft Live@edu accounts now works.

The paging system in the Medical Center is often referred to as the SIMON Paging System or just SIMON. It is operated by the University Operators who are located in Room 1075 in McKim Hall and are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The paging system will reach all areas in the hospital. The same is not true for paging systems operated by outside vendors.

Getting a Pager

To request a pager, fill out the Paging Access Form or go to Communication Services in Room 1075 in McKim Hall. The form must be signed by your departmental Manager. There is a charge for a pager; your department will be billed for an initial deposit of $235 and $23 each month for usage. Please see SIMON Paging System Information for Managers/Chief Residents for more information on department-wide paging.

PIC Numbers

The paging system uses PIC (Personal Identification Code) numbers for paging. A PIC number is a 4-digit number that is assigned when you obtain your pager; however, you do not have to have a paging system pager to have a PIC number. You may request a PIC number if you only have a pager, or a cell phone, from an outside company. Having a PIC number makes it easier for people to reach you. There is no charge for listing your outside pager or cell phone with the University Operators.

The PIC numbers of staff may be found in the Medical Information System (MIS), on the Health System website, in the Telephone Directory, and in the Paging Directory. PIC numbers are also available from the University Operators. The Paging Directory is distributed during House Staff orientation in the summer. Additional copies may be obtained from the University Operators. You may request that your PIC number not be published.

A Note about Voice Prompts

The paging system uses voice prompts to guide you. You don't have to wait for a voice prompt to finish before entering the information. Use the '#' key to tell the system you have completed the current entry.

How to Page Someone

  • Dial "500" from phones connected to the UVa Telephone System or 982-3500 from outside
  • Enter the PIC number of the person to be paged, and
  • Enter the call back number.

Keeping Your Pager Status Updated

You are responsible for letting the paging system know your availability, so that pages sent to you are handled correctly. You do this by calling the paging system and entering your status code, i.e. 10 (available for paging), 17 (can be reached at 'number'). The process for keeping your status code up-to-date is described below and a complete list of the status codes is available in the frequently asked questions (FAQs) about paging.

  • Dial "511" from phones connected to the UVa Telephone System or 982-3501 from outside
  • Enter your PIC number. System speaks your name and current status, and
  • Enter your new status or '#' for a list of status codes or other options.

Changing Between Your Paging System Pager and an Outside Pager

If you do not live in the general Charlottesville area you may find it necessary to use a pager from an outside vendor when you are out of the range of the SIMON Paging System. While SIMON paging system pagers have a range of 25-30 miles, hills, mountains, valleys, and other structures can interrupt the signal. If your status indicates you are available on your outside pager, you can still be paged using your PIC number if you have registered your outside pager company and number with the University Operators. Interfaces exist to all outside paging companies in use in the Medical Center: MetroCall, Arch, Ntelos, and University Wireless (formerly V-Tec). Should you need an interface to another company the secretary in Communication Services in McKim Hall will work to set it up.

  • Call the University Operators on 924-0000,
  • Give them your PIC number, and
  • Tell them which pager should be active.

Retrieving Your Stored Pages

  • Dial "511" from phones connected to the UVa Telephone System or 982-3501 from others,
  • Enter your PIC number. System speaks your name and current status, and
  • Enter '*', and
  • Enter 1 for active messages or 2 for archived messages (this will send you to the operator)
