[Nov 23, 2009 14:09] Web access to Microsoft Live@edu accounts now works.
What's Happening?
To achieve our goal of better UVa Exchange Service, we’re moving to a more secure, hardened messaging system in 2009. The UVa Exchange Service mailstore nodes have been moved to different physical locations and data is constantly replicated to the secondary location.
User accounts are being transitioned gradually to the hardened system, and once your account has been moved, you may notice slight changes in performance. The answers to the FAQs below outline some troubleshooting options you have if you encounter problems.

Outlook Connection Questions
- Outlook 2007 seems sluggish now that I have been moved to the hardened system. How do I fix it?

- Exit Outlook 2007.
- Wait 2 minutes.
- Re-start Outlook 2007.
- I do not use a VPN. Before I was moved to the hardened system, I was able to connect from home using Outlook, but that no longer works. How do I connect from home using my Outlook email program?
- You have the same options that VPN users have.
VPN Questions
- I used to be able to connect to the UVa Exchange Services using Outlook from home when I used a VPN to access a UVa secure system or server. Since I have been moved to the more secure Exchange Service, I find I have to exit the VPN to use Outlook. Is there a fix?
VPN profiles allow access to specific secure systems. Your UVa Exchange Service account has been moved to a more secure UVa Exchange Service server. The VPN profile you regularly use may not allow access to the UVa Exchange Service.
So, you have three options for viewing your UVa Exchange Service account when connecting from home and using your VPN:
- You can use Outlook Web Access (OWA) to access your UVa Exchange Service account while you are using your VPN. Use login: eservices\your UVa computing ID (e.g., eservices\mst3k) and password: your Eservices password.
- You can use UVaAnywhere (a part of the Cisco VPN). This option requires that you switch VPNs to use Outlook.
- You can try to use Outlook Anywhere.
- Note: Our experience is that Outlook Anywhere does not work everywhere; there are differences in success among Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and even variances in success (dependent upon location) with the same ISP.
- Note: Also, ITC does not support Outlook Anywhere; so if you cannot get it to work using the following instructions, assume that the problem lies with your ISP and try one of the other methods suggested above for access to your UVa Exchange Service account.
- To configure Outlook Anywhere for Outlook 2007/2003 (2003 differences appear in parentheses after the 2007 information):
- Select Tools from the menu bar.
- From the Tools dropdown menu, select Account Settings...
- (In Outlook 2003: Email Accounts...
- Select the View or Change Existing Email Accounts button.
- Click the Next > button.)
- In the Account Settings (Email Accounts) window, select your UVa Exchange Service account (e.g., Microsoft Exchange).
- Click the Change... button.
- Click the More Settings... button.
- Select the Connections tab.
- At the bottom of the Microsoft Exchange window, beneath Outlook Anywhere check the box beside Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP.
- Click the Exchange Proxy Settings... button.
- In the text Use this URL to connect to my proxy server for Exchange: field, type: mail.eservices.virginia.edu
- Check box beside Connect using SSL.
- From the Use this authentication when connecting to my proxy server for Exchange: dropdown menu, select NTLM Authentication.
- Click the OK button.
- Click the Apply button.
- Click the OK button.
- Click the Next-> button.
- Click the Finish button.
- Click the Close button
-
You may need to shut down Outlook (close it completely) and restart it after making these changes.
After establishing an Outlook Anywhere configuration, you will be able to connect with it where it works, but remember that it does not work with all ISPs, nor does it work in all locations with any given ISP.
Also, if it works for you from home, you do not need to do anything when you have your computer at work; Outlook knows when it needs Outlook Anywhere and ignores this configuration if Outlook Anywhere is not needed.

- Some of my calendar items are not displaying correctly in Entourage since I was moved, or the calendar is not showing recent changes. How do I make the calendar items display properly?
-
- Empty your cache.
To do this:
- Start Entourage.

- There may be a delay the first time you open someone else's calendar in Entourage after the move. This delay allows Entourage to reload the calendar information.
Mobile Device Questions
- Will this change affect my mobile device?
-
Maybe. Some mobile devices have required only a soft reset (turn the device off, then turn it back on again). Other mobile devices have required no changes.
Still others (usually older) devices have needed to “hotsync” information by having the desktop overwrite the handheld, as if it was an initial connection to the UVa Exchange Service.
