Stuff I like to read.
I present these in no particular order. Some are genuinely important
but most are not.
- I just started re-reading Possession by A.S. Byatt.
It's a great story.
- Anything by Flannery O'Connor. Be sure to get The Habit of
Being, which is a collection of her letters. Also look for Mystery
and Manners, essays and lectures about literature.
- Anything by Roy Blount, Jr. I didn't read his novel but all his
collections of magazine pieces are great. His new Book of Southern
Humor will keep you busy for a while, too.
- Molly Ivins.
- W.C. Fields By Himself, An Intended Autobiography was
written by a relative of his. It is drawn from his papers and bills
itself as the autobiography he would've written. It's very good.
- S.J. Perelman.
- Groucho and Me by Groucho Marx. Also look for the collected
letters of Groucho and the book that contains scripts for Flywheel, Beagle,
and Flywheel. (F as in fly, l as in liar, y as in why not, wheel as in
wheel cutlet).
- Hunter S. Thompson.
- I like Pat Conroy although I have only read
The Lords of Discipline and The Prince of Tides.
- Fran Lebowitz.
- Miss Manner's Guide to Excruciatingly Correct Behavior. No,
really.
- Mark Twain.
- Music Is My Mistress by Duke Ellington.
- A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. Or any of
his other stuff.
- Other Worlds by Paul Davies, an easy to follow look at some pretty
far out physics.
- Chaos by James Gleick. The cutting edge of New Math.
