Bo sez check these out:
Jazz
(more of a list of artists actually)
- Charlie Parker.
- Oscar Peterson.
- The Quintet of the Hot Club of France or almost anything Stephane
Grapelli has done since then.
- Louis Armstrong. Especially the Hot Fives and Hot
Sevens.
- Ella Fitzgerald. Lots o' good stuff to choose from. Look for
The Birthday Concert or any of her recordings with Joe Pass
or any of the Songbook albums (on Verve).
- Stan Getz.
- Herb Ellis. He has a fairly new album called "Texas Swings"
which is really nice. Sidemen include Johnny Gimble and Herb Remington.
There's a great album of him with Stuff Smith, too.
- Monty Alexander's Triple Treat albums, live with Ray
Brown, Herb Ellis, and Johnny Frigo.
- Paul Desmond.
- Just about any of those Jazz at the Philharmonic recordings.
- Jim Hall.
- Ben Webster. I just got a Verve compilation of his stuff that's
really good.
- Claude Williams has a couple of good live CDs on Arhoolie.
- I could go on and on.
Fiddle Music
- Poor Richard's Almanac is a great album! Features 17 year old
Sam Bush.
- The Championship Years features Mark O'Connor and some of
the best fiddle tune playing you'll ever hear.
- It's almost impossible to find but A Jam Session with Benny and
Jerry Thomasson on Voyager Records is terrific. Late Bulletin: This album
has been re-issued on cassette! Get it. Learn it. Live it.
- Andy McGann's "Tribute to Michael Coleman" album, with
Joe Burke and Felix Dolan has been re-issued on CD. It's
mostly accordian/fiddle duets, but there are a couple
of fiddle-only tracks. It's a great recording,
- See my list of favorite
fiddle players and get any and all albums featuring people on that list.
Everything Else
- Nanci Griffith, especially Last of the True Believers
and Lonestar State of Mind.
- All those "New Acoustic Music" cats like:
- Jerry Douglas especially:
- Under the Wire.
- Changing Channels.
- Skip, Hop, and Wobble (with Barenberg and Meyer).
- Edgar Meyer
- Sam Bush
- Bela Fleck (with or without The
Flecktones) especially:
- Drive on Rounder Records.
- Inroads also on Rounder.
- Tales from the Acoustic Planet is fantastic!
- Darol Anger (with the
Turtle Island Quartet or
Montreux) or
PsychograssLate
bulletin: Darol has left the TISQ. He's still on all their
old recordings, though. Darol's new recording "Heritage" is
fantastic.
- Russ Barenberg
- David Grisman
- Strength in Numbers, The Telluride Sessions.
- Willie Nelson, especially Over the Rainbow (featuring
some very hot fiddling from my hero, Johnny Gimble).
- Merle Haggard, especially his Tribute to Bob Wills and
his duet with Willie Nelson.
- Parallel Lines by Andy Irvine and Dick Gaughan.
- Dan Hicks and his Hot
Licks. Sure the Acoustic Warriors
are good, too. But they didn't record How Can I Miss You If You Won't
Go Away? did they?
- Vince Gill. He writes, he sings, he plays, he hosts award shows
with panache. What more do you want?
- The Gipsy Kings.
- Maura O'Connell.
- Robin and Linda Williams.
- George Jones. If you can listen to He Stopped Loving Her
Today with dry eyes, see a doctor immediately.
- Tim O'Brien Odd Man In and Rock in my
Shoe. Red on Blonde is good, too.
- And Tim's excellent albums with sister Mollie O'Brien.
- Mary Black.
- Paul Brady especially:
- Welcome Here, Kind Stranger.
- Hard Station.
-
Paul Glasse
has two excellent albums out. Check him out on dos Records.
- Here's a group I only know thru the web:Bo's Home Page.
